Water Conservation Hubby

I asked the question today: “Ever noticed how much water is wasted from when you turn on the hot water tap to when hot water actually comes out?”

My LTSH (Long Term Suffering Husband) replied, “Is this a trick question?”

Now, I admit that I do tend to terrorize him with Sustainability Ideas on an almost daily basis – but surely he doesn’t have to take it for granted that this was my intent on this particular day???

“No”

LTSH: “So, what’s the fix?”

“See this jug? When you turn on the tap, simply fill the jug until the water gets hot. That way we can use rather than it being wasted down the drain.”

LTSH: “What do you want me to do with the jug then?”

“Well, you could fill the water filter, or you can tip it in the washing machine, or leave it there and I’ll put it on my plants.”

“Cool”

2 Hours later:

LTSH: “Hey! Do you want to put a small bucket in the shower to catch the water before it gets hot, as well?”

Oooooooh! Why do I love him so very much?

Saving water is easy – a simple plastic jug or bucket does the trick!

We do this also, and sometimes we also take the water from the washing machine (from the rinse cycle) and put it on the flower garden. Ross.

My dream is to have a little switch on my kitchen, laundry and bath/shower drains that lets me divert to a watering system. So instead of all the mucking about with buckets, I could just divert whatever’s going down the plug hole to the various gardens around the house.

Have you seen any products like that?
