Blearh… how is this for scarey?
Austrian Scientists at the Veterinary University Vienna were commissioned by the Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety to conduct research on Genetically Modified produce.
So the scientists fed mice (poor things) Genetically Modified Corn that was developed by the Monsanto Corporation (US).
Here’s the big picture findings:
- GM Corn lowered fertility and body weight in the mice tested.
Here’s the detailed stuff:
- The feeding trials lasted over 20 weeks.
- Certain mice were fed a diet containing 33% of a GM variety of produce, others a closely related non-GE variety of produce used in many countries.
- Outcome was that litter sizes and pup weight decreased in the third and fourth litters of the GM-fed mice.
- Professior Zentek (lead author of the study) made the statement there was a direct link between the decrease in fertility and the Genetically Modified Diet.
Here’s something you should know:
- The Monsanto Corporation’s Genetically Modified Corn is modified with genes that produce a pesticidal toxin as well as genes to allow it to survive applications of the Monsanto’s herbicide, Roundup.
And speaking of the product, Roundup, here’s something that will probably scare the pants off you:
- Roundup contains the Herbicide Glyphosate, which is the third most commonly reported cause of pesticide illness among gardeners. If even a little Roundup is breathed in, say your neighbour is spraying it over their garden and the breeze sends the spray over your fence, the Glyphosate changes to form a new compound called N-nitrosoglyphosate, which causes tumours. (Well, isn’t that just great when you consider the amount of nurseries and other companies pushing Roundup). Oh, and I should also let you know that Glyphosate is also in Eazy Weeder, Slam Grass and Weed Killer, Zero Weed Spray and Wand, Comkill, Squadron, Tillmaster, Tumbleweed… and the list goes on.
